Wake Up America! The Astonishing Gap in Postpartum Care Compared to France!

Current/Future Mothers & Fathers:

Congratulations on embarking on this beautiful journey of parenthood! As a pelvic health physical therapist, I am acutely aware of the challenges and joys that come with the postpartum period. Today, I want to shed light on a shocking reality: the stark disparity between postpartum care in the USA and France. Understanding these differences can empower us to demand better support and care during this critical phase of our lives.

Did you know that-

1. Postpartum Maternity Leave:

In France, mothers are entitled to up to 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. However, in the USA, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) only guarantees 12 weeks of unpaid leave for eligible employees. Shockingly, nearly 25% of American mothers return to work within TWO WEEKS of giving birth due to financial constraints. Two weeks!!

2. Postpartum Healthcare Visits:

French mothers receive up to six postpartum healthcare visits within the first year of childbirth. On the contrary, women in the USA do not attend a postpartum visit until six weeks after giving birth and this visit is often times described as "very short / quick". This lack of follow-up can lead to undiagnosed and untreated postpartum complications which leads to increased pelvic floor dysfunction, depression, and even mortality!!!

3. Pelvic Health Awareness:

France places significant emphasis on pelvic health rehabilitation postpartum. They offer comprehensive pelvic floor physical therapy as standard care pre and post-partum to help mothers recover and regain control over their bodies. In contrast, the USA healthcare does not refer mothers to pelvic health specialist until their body suffers tremendously. Even then, many mothers are not told about a pelvic health care, hence, suffering silently from pelvic floor issues that could be effectively addressed through PFPT!

As mothers, ones often put the needs of the newborn baby and families before one's own. However, it's essential to remember that mothers' health and well-being are equally crucial. The postpartum period is a critical phase of recovery, both physically and emotionally. Neglecting care during this time can have long-lasting consequences, affecting the entire family's quality of life and overall happiness.
