ONE Thing You do that is Damaging your Pelvic Floor Every day!
When using a public restroom, my mom taught me to not sit directly on the commode seat to avoid germs.
Although "squatting," or hovering over the toilet to pee, may seem like a more sanitary alternative, it can really be harmful to the health of the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor muscles and hip muscles work together in delicate coordination to support the pelvic organs and maintain bladder and bowel control. When we hover over the toilet, we isometrically contract our hip muscles which tense up the pelvic floor muscles, leading to pelvic floor strain, weakening, incoordination, and pressure over time.
Sitting down on a toilet allows the hip muscles to relax, taking pressure off the pelvic floor muscles. This position also allows for complete evacuation of the bladder and bowels, reducing the risk of constipation and other digestive problems. Therefore, despite the fact that hovering over the toilet may feel cleaner, it is healthier for your pelvic floor health to sit down and take care of your business in a relaxed position.
*Pro tip: go to the first stall in restrooms, they are often the least utilized seat!
