Will holding my pee lead to Urinary Tract Infection?

Answer: YES! BUT NO!

Holding in urine for long periods of time is often assumed to be linked to urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, the link between holding in urine and UTIs is not as straightforward as it may seem.

UTIs are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and travel up into the bladder. Holding in urine does not directly cause bacteria to grow and multiply, but it can lead to an increase in urine concentration, making the urine more hospitable to bacteria, which ups the risk of UTIs.

Q: So, how long of a hold is TOO LONG?

A: 4 hours or more is too long! a normal voiding frequency is every 2-4 hours. Urinating sooner than 2 hours can lead to concerns such as frequent urination and overactive bladder; holding for more than 4 hours consistently can lead to increased urine acidity which irritates the bladder lining and promotes bacteria growth.

In conclusion, holding in urine does NOT directly cause UTIs, however, holding urine for WAY TOO LONG can indeed increase the risk of infection.

To reduce the risk of UTIs, it is important to practice good hygiene, urinate for a healthy amount of time frame, and be conscious of your gut health. If you are experiencing re-occurring symptoms of a UTI, seek medical treatment and talk to a PFPT!
